Radiation Therapy, Rectal Cancer Inclusive of 3-D Crt, Imrt
3D-Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT) uses CT scans and computer software to create a 3D image of the tumor. Using the image as a guide, a machine directs high-energy radiation through the skin and directly at the tumor, while sparing healthy tissue. Intensity-modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) delivers radiation to the tumor site, patterned to match the shape of the tumor. This is done by modulating the intensity of the radiation beams. The tumor receives the high doses necessary to destroy the cancer cells while the surrounding organs and tissues receive lower doses. Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) uses high doses of targeted radiation to destroy tumors. It eliminates tumors with surgical precision but without actual surgery being performed.
